For the second year in a row the SMAA XC Coaches Association honored Will by recognizing student-athletes of outstanding character by selecting the Will to Win Team at their end of the season banquet.
According to South Portland coach, Karen Reardon, this award is, “Named in honor of former Biddeford H.S. Coach Will Fulford who unfortunately passed away almost two years ago. The award recognizes the passion that Will had for coaching and running and the criteria also relates to the Prefontaine quote that Will used to share with his athletes – ‘To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.”
The coaches aim to recognize athletes based on the following criteria:
•a hard worker
•makes the most of their abilities
•contributes to your team dynamic in a positive way
•a leader, either in word or action
•someone you feel like you can’t live without on your team
•always willing to go the extra mile
•all-around good citizen
•top performer is not necessary but should not be discounted for this award either
This years team includes:
Hannah D’Orso of Kennebunk, Katelyn Smith of Windham, Grace Tumavicus of Deering, Sitsanok Young of Biddeford, Kirill Perederii of Windham, and Jack Wilson of Cheverus.
Thank you to the SMAA XC Coaches Association for continuing to honor Will. And congratulations to this year’s SMAA Will to Win team!
